Grant could lead to water trail plan, improved access to waterways

Public access to local waters will be the focus of a Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission project along the Ahnapee River and in the city of Algoma.

The commission received a $5,589 Land Use and Community Planning grant last week via the Wisconsin Department of Administration’s Wisconsin Coastal Management Program.

The project will assess public access locations to the Ahnapee River from Lake Michigan inland to the Forestville Dam. In Algoma, the commission plans to develop a water trail plan and a master plan for Olson Park.

The commission is a multi-service entity within Wisconsin that provides planning and technical assistance to member local governments in 10 Northeast Wisconsin counties, administering a number of federal, state and local programs.

Gov. Scott Walker on Thursday announced $1.2 million in grants awarded to foster economic development projects, improve the Great Lakes resources, and support the quality of life of those in Wisconsin’s coastal communities.
