The song starts with whining chords and an eerie first verse
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee."
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy.
"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot introduced most of the world to the tragedy 44 years ago this Sunday, Nov. 10, but it remains a vivid memory for many in the Great Lakes region of northern Minnesota.
